After the long, wet winter, blue skies and perfect weather brought pooches and their people out to Western Gateway Park on Sunday, June 12 for AnimalSave’s 3rd Annual Wag ‘n’ Walk and Costumed Dog Parade. Wag ‘n’ Walk is one of the few events that is totally about ‘The Dog’. We want to honor the important role this family member plays in our lives and give folks ideas of ways to deepen their relationship and have more fun with Fido.
Produced by the newly formed Friends of AnimalSave committee and sponsored by the Union, SPD Market, Meyers Investment Group of Robert W. Baird & Co., B & C True Value Home Center, Incredible Pets, Diana Bailey and Petco, Wag ‘n’ Walk has become a popular event folks look forward to each year and is one of AnimalSave’s main fund raising events.
Winners in the Costumed Dog Parade were ‘Shadow’ Minetti, dressed as a poker table, and ‘Dash’ Caselli in cowboy garb. ‘Abby’ Ames won best smile award in her shark suit. New this year was a children’s drawing contest. Winners were Blake Hronis, Paeton Ferrante, Katie May Sisk, Lucy Guthrie, Melanie Sheppard and Jaz Virginia Brayton.
The day included a barbecue lunch, cold treats from Lazy Dog Ice Cream, raffle prizes, children’s games, great music by Silvercreek DJ & Dance Productions and the opportunity to shop with the many vendors who brought their wares. Pooches and their people had the opportunity to watch obedience demonstrations by JoAnn Fine, Top Dog Obedience, and her students and agility demonstrations by Pam Rogers. Nineteen dogs took the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. Dogs received chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Woodhall, acupressure treatments from Elise Thompson, and treats from Aunty Em’s.
Folks toured AnimalSave’s Low-Cost Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic and AnimalSave foster puppies received lots of attention from folks wanting to adopt.
Proceeds from Wag ‘n’ Walk will help AnimalSave continue the important animal welfare programs it has been providing for the past eleven years. Our programs—especially the Low-Cost Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic that alters close to 2,000 dogs and cats each year and our Foster/Adoption Program that finds homes for nearly 400 dogs and cats, kittens and puppies every year—provide a continuum of care that prevents animals from entering the more costly and difficult shelter system.
Thanks to our sponsors, vendors, volunteers, participants and the doggies for making this year’s Wag ‘n’ Walk a howling success!
For the animals,

Nelly, (formerly called “Nala”) is a 4-month-old pitbull full of puppy joy and enthusiasm. She loves her toys, other dogs, and especially people. She likes to be warm and cuddled up inside when the weather is cold and rainy, but runs and plays outside when it is sunny. Since she is a pitbull, she must behave better than all other dogs—so only a dedicated dog person willing to take her to training classes should apply. She is quite smart so learns quickly, and like most pitbulls, she likes to please her people. Her adoption fee is $250, which includes a $50 deposit refunded upon completion of obedience classes.

Thank you to John and Mary Fischer for opening their home for a holiday party and to their guests who donated over $600.00 to the animals that AnimalSave helps. The party was lovely and Kathi and I made some new friends. A home party for the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries or any other reason is a great way to get some good folks together and fund raise for the animals. Contact me if you have an interest in putting on a home party as a benefit for AnimalSave. 271-7071 x 201

Thank you also to Beads Galore and to the wonderful artists who donated proceeds from jewelry kit sales and the silent auction totaling over $400 to the animals.

Attendees and dogs both benefited from Tom’s healing gift. It was such a success, we are planning more workshops with Tom. Watch here for more information on upcoming workshops. Thank you, Tom, for donating half of your fees to the animals. And thank you for all the other help you have given to our foster animals. You are amazing!

From my observation and what I heard from long-time volunteers of the Auction and from folks in attendance, this was the best auction ever. We just keep getting better!

And thank you, shoppers and all those attending the auction! You made a difference for the animals.

Massage is a proven, natural way to improve the health, happiness, and longevity of your pets. It’s fun, easy, and the benefits are real! If we’re going to touch our animals, why not include regular therapeutic massage? You can be the guide to helping your pets optimize their health and sense of well being. You’ll learn how to give a basic massage of the major muscle groups and work with the joints and tendons to maintain flexibility and range of motion. We’ll also integrate acupressure by massaging along the pathways of energy (meridians) on the body, as well as “spicing” the massage by touching key acupressure points that stimulate the immune system.

Tom Wilson, Ph.D., is the director of the Animal Acupressure Training Academy, Nevada City, CA, a faculty member of the Acupressure Institute, Berkeley, CA, and Director of Education at A Chance for Bliss Animal Sanctuary, Penryn, CA. He is a certified teacher and practitioner of multiple energy healing modalities for both animals and humans. Tom maintains a private practice in Nevada City, California. Contact Tom at 530-913-1309, or by email at tomasso@pobox.com. Visit the Animal Acupressure Training Academy website at www.animalata.com

Beads Galore Silent Auction to Benefit AnimalSave

On Saturday, December 4 from 1–4 p.m., Beads Galore, at 989 Sutton Way in Grass Valley, will host a silent auction of beaded art made by local artisans.

Fabulous jewelry, bead-embellished clothing and wearable art, and even bead and wire sculpture will be available for purchase at the auction/party. Artisans may donate any portion of their proceeds to AnimalSave, so bid generously! The benefit/auction is part of the annual Fall Beading Contest, sponsored by the Beads Galore store, where local crafters purchase beading kits, use the kit beads in their creations, then display their work at Beads Galore.

From now until December 4, you can visit the store to see the works on display. Your purchase of any non-auction item lets you get a ballot and cast your vote to determine the winning piece. The winning artist receives a $100 gift certificate from Beads Galore, and the runner-up receives a $50 gift certificate.

Beads Galore puts together beading kits for contestants and donates 100% of the $5 purchase price of the kits to AnimalSave. Beads Galore is open Monday–Saturday 9 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Beads Galore has the largest selection of beads and findings in the area.
